My review of "Rockers"

1. How does the main character, Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace, compare to the other main characters (Ivan Martin and Derrick Thompson) in the first two films we saw? Horsemouth is like a combination of both Ivan Martin and Derrick. He is more of a tradicional hero protagonist like Derrick was in " Ghett’a Life", but in a extremely similar setting and introduction to "The Harder They Come". He starts up very similar to Martin, down on his luck, wants to be a musician, etc, but takes the opposite path i guess you could say. Instead of becoming some sort of vigilante/terrorist figure, he becomes kind of a Robin Hood. So in my opinion i liked Hoursemouth as a protagonist more than the other two. Martin i liked a lot as well but he being an antihero, he did stuff that was pretty wrong, and i thought Derrick was a little boring unfortunately. 2. Did you like or dislike the film? Why/Why Not?   I did like it a lot. It feels like its a more refined and better cr...

My review of "Ghett’a Life"

1. Who was your favorite character (s) from the film? Why? I think my favourite character was Dereck 's mom, Dawn. She was with her son all the way through, always defending him, even when one else was. Going against the community in order to save her son, that takes a lot of bravery. The actress also did a great job, i think Karen Robinson 's performance as Dawn is the best performace in the entire film.  When she was to be supportive she does it pretty well, and when she was to act all freaked out it is also very convincing and moving. 2. How do we see the political conflict portrayed in the film? In the 70s and 80s the violence in Jamaica was mainly sparked from idiological diferences between the two big parties. And in the movie we see something similar, two sides that absolutely hate each other and fight to the death. However unlike the real history, here the main diference between the sides is completly arbitraty, we never know what which side wants politically. They ...

My review of "The harder they come"

Hello, this is my review of the jamaican film "The Harder They Come" (1972) 1. In general, what did you like and dislike about the film? I really enjoyed the story, the characters and the general atmosphere of the film. Despite all of the problems Jamaica seems to have, it stills manages to feel like a really cool place to be.  Knowing that there was barely any film industry in jamaica when this film was made, makes it quite impressive. There is a high quality cinematography, there is clearly a great deal of technical skill and talent involved, and quite a big cast, the script for the most part is also quite good. Is is very inspiring what the filmmakers managed to achieve in this movie. Unfortunately there is also a lot of problems with it. Despite having a good cinematography, sometimes the camera movements are straight from cheese 70s B-movies from america. As well as the terrible special effects, like they were very influenced by those types of movies. Those elements...
